| Martin S.Goldberg enlisted in the Air
Corp in September of 1942 just 18 years old. He reported for basic
training and shortly thereafter he was sent as a cadet to Santa Anna
California for pre-flight training and then to Thunderbird for primary
flight training. At Thunderbird he was reclassified from pilot training
and sent to Radio/Gunnery school where he graduated as a radio gunner.
He was sent on to B24 transition training at Tonopah Nevada. It was there
that he was the first selected by a pilot for a crew that was made up of
10 men and they trained together ate together and partied together and
became a perfect flight team. Then another radio gunner on a crew ready
to leave for combat got ill and Sgt. Goldberg was asked to fill in on that
crew. He tried in every way to get back to his own crew but was forced
to go over seas with the assigned crew and as it turned out he gained
the greatest respect for his new pilot. The irony of it all was that the
gunner assigned to his old crew was in a ship that shot down in combat.
The B24 combat crew that Sgt. Goldberg went overseas with flew from Tonopah to A base bear Sacramento then on to Hawaii at Hickam field where they stayed for two months before Flying to their combat base at Saipan. They flew missions from there until the B29 s took over the base and they moved to Guam.AN IRONY HERE WAS THE SGT. GOLDBERG WAS BORN ON 7/11/1924 AND HE FLEW WITH THE 7TH AIR FORCE, THE 11TH BOMB GROUP IN B24S . 7/11/24 The missions they flew were 10 to 12 hours long at 20 to 24 thousand feet and primary targets were enemy ships ,airfields, fuel storage ammo dumps enemy combat troupes by Bombing and strafing He flew a total of 39 missions and earned the DFC on a mission where amongst other duties he shot down an enemy aircraft that was very likely to have shot them down. After his missions he was in the hospital for a couple of months with a combat zone illness and then after a weeks rest leave he got his orders to go home. He was discharged from the service in October of 1945
