Joe experienced an a system of awarding the Air medals for flying a set number of missions which has been miss understood over the years weakening the impression of the award as though it was an automatic award for flying a number of missions. Far from the truth as in fact it was done that way to alleviate the workload because actually these flyers answered the criteria for the Air Medal award many more tomes than the once every 6 or 10 missions. Most combat airmen earned Air Medals in that definition almost every mission they flew
