| Roy
June was born August 12th, 1922 in Forsyth ,Montana and on graduating
from
High School he went to Montana State University in engineering and then
to The University Of Montana in Journalism and and Business
administration .Because
the draft board was looking at Roy's age group, he and several of his
fraternity brothers enlisted in the Army Air Corp. He was sworn in and went
to the Army
reserve until he was assigned the Aviation Cadet training at Santa Anna
Army Air base in March of 1943. It was then primary flight training in
the PT 22 at Eagles Field ,Dos Palos California; Then basic training in
the BT 13 at Lemoore Field near Fresno California: and advanced training
in the
AT 6 at Williams Field, Chandler Arizona. Roy June graduated with class
of 44B as a 2nd Lt. Pilot and then assigned to Blacksburg Air Base in
Virginia for transition training in the P-47.
There were 40 pilots in this transition training and half of them were assigned to the European theater of operation and half of them to the Pacific and Roy was in the latter group into intense training for that assignment. Lt. Roy June was assigned to the 47th fighter squadron , 15th Fighter Group, VII Fighter Command, 7th Air Force and switched from P-47s thunderbolts to P-51 Mustangs. His group was sent to Iwo Jima to fly escort from Iwo to Japan for protection of B-29 Super Fortresses which had been suffering heavy losses in their bombing raids over Japan At this point the Marines had taken the southern portion of Iwo Jima and Roy flew a few missions in support of the Marines who were fighting in northern Iwo Jima. The CBs were able to build three air strips on Iwo Jima and P-51 fighters started flying their missions from those new bases . The rest of Lt. Junes missions were flown primarily in support of the B-29s bombing Tokyo and they were eight- hour missions with the P-51s setting records for flying time with wing tanks an fuselage tanks and the pilot expertise in fuel management. The other missions were low level strafing and attack missions on Japanese shipping and land targets On June 10th ,1945 June and his flight leader were credited with downing an enemy aircraft and later on his wingman and he sent a Hamp down in smoke over Tokyo. | Lt. Roy June was honorably
discharged from the service in January of 1946 and went back to the
University of Montana at Missoula on the G-I
bill. After graduating from Law School, Roy practiced Law in Billings,
Montana. In 1961 he started his practice of Law in Costa
Mesa, California and continued that practice until his retirement in
1994. Besides his practice of Law in California he served as the
City Attorney for the City of Costa Mesa.

| Prior
to attending Law School, Roy June met and married Laura Jane Brautigam on
August 20,1949. Laura became a nursing school science instructor while
Roy attended law school st the University of Montana They had two children
- Patricia who became a school principal and passed away in 1997,
leaving a husband and two children, Matthew and Melisa . Their son
Richard is married to Tannaz and they have two children-- Sheila and Cameron.
Richard is the Deputy District Attorney in Kern County California and
Tannaz is a Deputy District attorney for Los Angeles County, California. Roy and Laura retired to Joshua Tree, California in 1996 and spend some of their time volunteering at the Palm Springs Air Museum . |
